Great stuff Rip!

Camille André especially, I find that soft toned work more resonant for the possible planes I find myself thinking about.

First Trailer for 'The Signal' Arrives:

"While driving through Nevada with Nick’s girlfriend, Hailey (Olivia Cooke), they follow rival hacker Nomad’s clues to a location 180 miles away. After a terrifying confrontation with Nomad in the desert, the trio regain consciousness in captivity, are forced to confinement and discover they are part of something unbelievable."

The Giver - Official Trailer:

I think a lot of sci-fi tropes, especially utopia/dystopia considerations/permutations would actually be enacted in Planescape.

"VR originated within marginal subcultures: from science fiction, cyberpunk, and computer hacker culture, and from institutions including NASA, computer companies, and the military. Perceiving much wider applications than flight simulation and remote control, researchers coined the term “virtual reality,” and promoted it as a paradigm shift for computers, and even for the whole society. The shift, though, was not into empty terrain: it was into such existing fields as entertainment, art, architecture, design and medicine.… Moving from marginal cultural tributaries into the cultural mainstream, though, VR itself had to change; it needed to remove its uncomfortable associations with social criticism, drugs and insanity"
-Chris Chesser

I think a lot of our modern entertainment concepts, including/especially television, would be reproduced in Sigil via magic akin to recorder stones. Of course "Reality TV" would range from inter-exemplar dating to harrowing dives into the Abyss or Inner Planes.

Being an accomplished illusionist is less useful for conflicts in a Multiverse where lots of beings are immune to your effects. Seems to me that would lead to a growth in the "VR" industry as well.

Of course, the popularity of these things might vary as well. If you have a chance to be part of an observer determined reality the entertainment provided by the Scifi/Fantasy genre may not hold as much appeal to you.

At the same time, I could see soap operas and the like commanding the peoples' attention, and groups like the Incantifiers would probably want to talk about the "Future Benefits of Magic" in the way Cosmos is currently trying to get people interested in the benefits of scientific exploration.

It cannot be that our life is a mere bubble,
cast up by eternity to float a moment on its waves
and then sink into nothingness.

There is a realm where the rainbow never fades,
where the stars will be spread out before us
like islands that slumber in the ocean,
and where the beautiful beings,
which now pass before us like shadows,
will stay in our presence forever.

—George D. Prentice, Man’s Higher Destiny

Plato’s Realm of Forms:

http://www.scandalon.co.uk/philosophy/plato_forms.htm

"Plato’s theory of forms (or ideas) lies at the heart of his philosophy. It follows on directly from his allegory of the cave and understanding reality. One of the problems that philosophers tried to answer in ancient Greece was that of relating the many to the one. For example when we see a particular chair for the first time how do we know it is a chair? The particular example of the chair we are presented with might not bear any resemblance to any other chair we have seen before yet we know instinctively that it is a chair..."

Physical Chemistry Professor Lothar Schäfer has an updated take on this concept, for those who might want some kind of science-fantasy:

"I think of horror films as art, as films of confrontation. Films that make you confront aspects of your own life that are difficult to face."
- David Cronenberg

"Prajapati was alone. He didn’t even know whether he existed or not. ‘So to speak’, iva. (As soon as one touches on something crucial, it’s as well to qualify what one has said with the particle iva, which doesn’t tie us down.) There was only the mind, manas. And what is peculiar about the mind is that it doesn’t know whether it exists or not. But it comes before everything else. ‘There is nothing before the mind.’

Then, even prior to establishing whether it existed or not, the mind desired. It was constant, diffuse, undefined. Yet, as though drawn to something exotic, something belonging to another species of life, it desired what was definite and separate, what had shape. A self, atman – that was the name it used. And the mind imagined that self as having consistency. Thinking, the mind grew red hot. It saw thirty-six thousand fires flare up, made of mind, made with mind. Suspended above the fires were thirty-six thousand cups, and these too were made of mind."

Dazzling Chinese Pavilion Resembles Waves of Wheat

http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/land-of-hope-chinese-pavilion

' The winning entry to build China’s Pavilion at the Milan Expo 2015 is a stunning reinterpretation of a public space. Designed in collaboration between Tsinghua University and New York-based Studio Link-Arc, the duo rejected the notion of a typical pavilion, and instead came up with a structure that resembles billowing fields of wheat. It’s a thoughtful and creative twist on the Expo’s theme, “Feeding the Planet - Energy for Life.” According to the architects, the 5,000-square-meter space entitled Land of Hope is centered around the idea that, “hope can be realized when nature and the city exist in harmony.” '

Mind-bending Installation at TED Helps You Find Your Social Soulmate

http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/mindbending-installation-at-te...

"...Experiential marketing agency MKG collaborated with artists Lauren McCarthy and Kyle McDonald to create Social Soul, an immersive digital experience that all started with the question, "How does it feel to be inside someone else's social media stream?"

Sponsored by Delta Air Lines, the space consists of 50 monitors on the ceiling, mirrored walls and a reflective floor. In coming up with the design, MKG took inspiration from Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room, the popular installation that drew an unprecedented number of New Yorkers to David Zwirner gallery to experience the closest they'd probably ever come to stepping into space...."

A stormy wind was coming from the north, a great cloud with flashing fire and a brilliance surrounding it;… and from its midst, a semblance of four living things…. They did not turn as they moved, each went in the direction of its face…. And as for the appearance of the living things, their appearance was like fiery coals, burning like the appearance of torches…. There was a brilliance to the fire, and from the fire went forth lightning…. Then I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of great waters…the sound of the words like the sound of a company…. I fell upon my face and I heard a voice speaking….

“Son of man, stand on your feet and I will speak to you.”

"I am a fictionalizing philosopher, not a novelist; my novel & story-writing ability is employed as a means to formulate my perception. The core of my writing is not art but truth. Thus what I tell is the truth, yet I can do nothing to alleviate it, either by deed or explanation. Yet this seems somehow to help a certain kind of sensitive troubled person, for whom I speak.

I think I understand the common ingredient in those whom my writing helps: they cannot or will not blunt their own intimations about the irrational, mysterious nature of reality, & for them, my corpus of writing is one long ratiocination regarding this inexplicable reality, an investigation & presentation, analysis & response & personal history.

My audience will always be limited to those people."

Re: The PS Inspiration Thread

2nd Upd8 4 2day:

“Though men in the mass forget the origins of their need, they still bring wolfhounds into city apartments, where dog and man both sit brooding in wistful discomfort.

The magic that gleams an instant between Argos and Odysseus is both the recognition of diversity and the need for affection across the illusions of form. It is nature's cry to homeless, far-wandering, insatiable man: "Do not forget your brethren, nor the green wood from which you sprang. To do so is to invite disaster.”
― Loren Eiseley, The Unexpected Universe

“Since the first human eye saw a leaf in Devonian sandstone and a puzzled finger reached to touch it, sadness has lain over the heart of man. By this tenuous thread of living protoplasm, stretching backward into time, we are linked forever to lost beaches whose sands have long since hardened into stone. The stars that caught our blind amphibian stare have shifted far or vanished in their courses, but still that naked, glistening thread winds onward. No one knows the secret of its beginning or its end. Its forms are phantoms. The thread alone is real; the thread is life.”
― Loren Eiseley, The Firmament of Time

"Man would not be man if his dreams did not exceed his grasp. ... Like John Donne, man lies in a close prison, yet it is dear to him. Like Donne's, his thoughts at times over leap the sun and pace beyond the body. If I term humanity a slime mold organism it is because our present environment suggest it. If I remember the sunflower forest it is because from its hidden reaches man arose. The green world is his sacred center. In moments of sanity he must still seek refuge there. ... If I dream by contrast of the eventual drift of the star voyagers through the dilated time of the universe, it is because I have seen thistledown off to new worlds and am at heart a voyager who, in this modern time, still yearns for the lost country of his birth.”
― Loren Eiseley, The Invisible Pyramid
