Announcement!

We have moved to new, and hopefully better hardware! Along with this move came a bunch of updates to our code base. Please let me know if you spot something wonky.

Spreading the Cant

I love the idea of people who have never even heard of Planescape speaking in Cant. So I've started posting cant terms on the Urban Dictionary website. Jink was already there, so I know I am not the only one. If you can, help me out, add a few more words. Be sure not to tip off the mundanes about the origin of the terms, we want them unwitting and innocent... Eye-wink

On a kinda related note,

one of the contestors in this online Sony reality-show called PS tester was nick named "Barmy", and the host said "What is a barmy anyway?", when introducing him. Sadly the dude was the first to go down so he didn't have much chance of explaining it..

Re: Spreading the Cant

Was he a Brit? Because "barmy" in the sense that it's used in Cant has been British slang for over 100 years now, it's still fairly common today.

Actually, same for a lot of Cant, a good portion of it is just old British slang. Barmy, berk, sod, bob, peel, twig, they're all from there, mostly the Victorian era. Maybe some others too, those are the only ones I know from a quick check.

You know, though, now that's got me interested. Might be neat to put together an etymology of Cant. Not an in-universe etymology (though that might be interesting as well), but I mean a real life one. Some of them I'm not sure what the origin of the term was, like jink, or lann.

I've seen something along the lines of an etymology somewhere before, but can't remember where... possibly something related to PS:Torment.

Re: Spreading the Cant

I once hypothesized that the use of "sod' on the Outer Planes was caused by a sudden influx of nasty, pathetic Clueless when the city of Sodom was destroyed on the Prime...
