Penance:

As you open the door, a very elaborate chime rings very loudly. A few seconds later, Ferrisore's head pops down from a hole in the roof and regards his new customer.

"What could possibly bring a (whatever you are currently disgused as. Human, right?) to my shop at this hour of the night?" asks the rust dragon irately. He gives the impression he'd rather eat you than talk to you.

(OOC: It is pretty late now.)

The human form waivers into nothingness, revealing a figure of metallic design. The filigrees of mithril, silver, and gold that course through the construct's humanoid frame reflect the dull light of the room. Penance's almond eyes are now inorganic, though arcanely lucid. "I figured the brother of Zjar'taz would want to hear first of a unique weaponry fired in Sigil this evening; I can always return to Thuldanin and share my information with him if you wish to sleep instead."

The falxugon waits for Trift to rendezvous with him, and takes on the appearance of a well-armed and armored battle-weathered genasi traveller (one of Canzon’s favourite guises to appear as a blood that wants to be left alone, while blending in nicely with the general Sigilian populace).

The duo leaves the unsettling “greens” of Mockery Park and heads off to seek out a place where the spoils from the Crossed Daggers Inn can be selled off.
[No real desire on my part to play this out, unless something noteworthy comes up. There’s no rush either – if no interested trading parties currently can be tracked down, Canzon can wait until another day]

After this business has been conducted the fiend releases Trift for the night, sending the tiefling to the Sigilian residence on Fine Print so he can get a full meal, tend to his gear, and get some well-deserved rest.

Canzonzabar himself is unconcerned with both sleep and food, beyond the experiences that can be savoured from a delicious dinner or beverage. He teleports home, checks that everything is in order, and deposits any funds earned for the day. As paranoid as every baatezu, he ensures his wealth is locked, trapped, and warded (possibly multiple times) in a variety of hidden locations. However, he retains on his person easily transported trading valuables worth about 2000 gp – gems, platinum, gold, and a few coppers (though silver does not harm him, he still loathes the metal as his kinsmen does).

[This organization of wealth can be regarded as standard procedure for Canzonzabar, though should he at some point amass more than a few thousand worth of gold, he’ll likely move the majority to his villa in Dis.

The fiend then spends the night gathering information on members of the mission he is to oversee, though only to the extent that he can do so without attracting attention (relative to someone of his skills).

Canzon starts off with researching Min, and with the notion that she has worked as advisor for the Eighteen, he teleports to the main administrative building of the Ministry of Mortal Affairs and charms his way to information in the guise of an erinyes.

Penance steps among the weapons, picking up a rather broad blade. He angles it in the lighting to glint a reflection of the area above him, absently replying. "Besides the information I hope to broker, I would like to see what arms you may have for facing hallowed champions. And fiends...especially of the baatezu origin."

With the dragon's aid, you are able to see the scrying sensor, it floats about two feet above your head.

Canzon:

You are greeted by a annother Erinyes secretary in the lobby. There are a few other fiends and mortals siting on benches throughout the white marble room.

"If you wouldn't mind, please present your papers and state the nature of your visit," says the secretary.

Penance thumbs the amulet around his neck and mentally notes to kill anyone who praises such worthless junk. "Yes, it would seem that we have...unwarranted company. I would end the intrusion, save that is not my specialty.

"Since I cannot, I will be terse." He retrieves the holy sword and a pair of golden statuettes in the form of lions. "I am willing to part with first more ready than the second. If you can inform me of the origins of this blade, it would be most helpful, as it was used in an assault in the Crossed Daggers." He pauses for effect, for both the dragon and whoever is peering. I shall savor discovering this nuisance's origin...

The dragon plods down a ramp from the second floor and takes the sword in his claw.

"Ah, this blade was forged by Erais and Kyrz. See the emblem on the bottom of the grip," he says, pointing to an anvil with two spears crossed over it etched onto the steel. "They are a large outfit that mass produces fine swords and sells them in bulk to people like myself. I've not known them to produce any enchanted blades, however. Thier shops is only 3 blocks spinward on this street and they have people working all night to keep production up. It is a fine sword without whatever enchantments it may have in adition to being holy." After glancing cautiously at the scrying sensor, the dragon adds: "I'll have to use a scroll to identify the value and authenticity of these items. You will of course pay for that."

"Of course, I only charge exactly what the scrolls cost me. It's bad business otherwise."

The dragon reuturns with several scroll cases. After several minutes of casting and careful looking, Ferrisore speaks again.

"I will pay 32 merts for the sword--and that is a fine deal indeed. I ask 15 for the statue. Of course, this excludes the 400 jink for the two scrolls. With that kind of coin, you can buy many fine blades. Which do you wish to see first."

"If such a weapon was to be fired by a human-sized user, it wouldn't be constructed like a typical crossbow. Much larger, probably with the bolt taking up a good deal more space. How long was this weapon exactly?"

Penance recalls the images to his mind, allowing the visions to re-enact, holding the four figures suspended in his memory. He focuses on the bolt as it releases from the gun, studying the dimension of the launcher. "Three weeks is reasonable, I think. If things progress faster than that, I will be certain to inform you."

OOC: This crossbow crossbow is baisically a balista that does 4d6 instead of 3d8 and has a critical range of (19-20) and a 150' range increment. Attacks are made at a -2 penalty and it is an exotic weapon as far as proficiencies go. It's been used as an assasin-weapon-of-terror in one of my tabletop campaigns.

Canzonzabar presents his Papyrus of Deception, which has taken on the form of identification papers for his cover – Naelysia, an erinyes conducting internal investigations (and with such authority granted in the papers).

“I need information on a free-lance mage whom would seem to have been hired by the Ministry recently. The subject is known simply as Min, originating from the prime world of Ad’ter. This matter is a standard inquiry into free-lance employees, but I would still need it to be handled with discretion.”

If necessary, “Naelysia” also provides a brief description of Min’s appearance.

OOC:
Forgery check for papers (incl +5 enhancement from the item itself).
Disguise to act in character.
Diplomacy to gain cooperation.

Oh yeah, forgot about identification for the magic loot. Canzonzabar acquired quite a lot of items, so I guess the cheapest solution would be to pay for a casting of Analyse Dweomer (660 gp at caster level 11 + 150 gp for focus requirement). Let’s just handle it later, Canzon would want to see what he’s got before selling it, anyway.

The secretary reviews your papers quickly and nods.

"Well, you have one thing right, and one thing entirely wrong," says the Erinyes in a mockingly helpful tone. "You are half correct in that she was indeed hired by the ministry for intelligence work--and probably most of the other important organizations in Hell's gate at some point too. But," says the the Erinyes in a tone that only a devil who deals in contracts can truly immitate, "You are on the long list of cutters looking in the wrong building. I suggest you try Immortal Afairs, though I hear most her records are supressed by one pit fiend or annother. Is there anything else I ca help you with?"

Outside, the devil slips into an empty alley, changes shape to a different erinyes (“Ferexyis”), teleports to the Ministry of Immortal Affairs and repeats the former procedure.

Canzon:

With a telepathic cammand, the secretary calls a bearded devil to the desk. "Take her to employee records."

When you arrive at the heavy, cold-iron door, flanked two Hamatulas, you are asked for your papers again. When they are accepted, the bearded devil enters and indicates you should follow him in. The room has high vaulted celings of white marble, like all of the 3 ministry branches in Sigil. Boring steel bookshelves stretch the length of the room and almost to the celing. They are alphabetized by first name since not many immortals have surnames. Min's record is surprisingly small.

"Most is supressed," grunts the Barbazu, "Person asked week past for papers, suppressed then too. Kebez learned say suppressed when angry cornugon wanted more papers of Min, and Kebez could not get him. Happened two-times-hundred years ago. Cannot get you either. Kebez much sorry."

Intersiting things about Min you find in the records:

-Her age is unkown though the first mention of her is about 2000 years ago in Dis.

-She is part mortal, part devil, and part 'loth, though she is extremely unusual in that her soul and body are one unit, like a fiend's despite some mortal blood. This means that she would reform on her home plane (Which that is is unknown).

-She has completed 5 advanced study programs (essentialy infernal PHDs. most devils don't complete more than two-politics and promotion being more interesting. Min studied magic, alchemy-chemistry, psycological warfare, intelligence gathering, and infernal law) at Kiru'hadis, a technical university in Dis. It is equally prestigous as Grenpoli, but newer and less bound by tradition. Non-devil students are accepted at high cost or on scholarship (as was Min's case) if they are exceptionally evil and will serve the Baatezu cause either inadvertantly or intentionally.

-She has served in the Baatezu Second Command (navy) and has honorary aminzu rank in the infernal hierarchy when commanding troops on the Styx

Canzonzabar carefully studies what he has gotten his hands on, taking notes as needed. He is soundly impressed with what Min has accomplished, and very content that she has so long a history of faithfully serving Baator.

Certainly a very unique case… More fiend than mortal it would seem… She will likely prove to be a most efficient ally to bring on board…

Satisfied with his research, the falxugon stacks Min’s papers neatly and returns them to their place in the archives.

“Very well, Kerbez, my business here is concluded. Be smart and do not speak of this visit beyond what your duties demand, and I will put in a good word for you with your superiors.”

“Ferexyis” leaves the records, again following any protocol that may be required, and exits the Ministry buildings. Outside, the fiend teleports to within a short walk of Canzonzabar’s home and drops the disguise in a private location. He then heads in, does a routine inspection, and writes down a full profile on Min based on what he has learned.

The eloquent Penance seemed mercenary and very likeminded - he would probably also accept the mission. Let’s see what we can dig up, shall we?

The harvester puts down pen and paper, stores Min’s profile in his personal records (which are treated as he treats his money), then heads out in the night once more to spy and research.

Canzonzabar teleports to a central plaza in the Lower Ward, finds a place where he can have a moment’s privacy, then assumes the guise of a seasoned bladeling warrior. He marches out in the streets to find a working tout, and flashes it a piece of gold.

“Evening to ya’, can ye’ point an ol’ veteran from the fields of Acheron in the direction of some mercenary companies in this city – someone that aims for warriors of my world? I need to track down a basher I used to work with on Thuldanin.”

The dragon returns with weapons in his claws. "These, I think will be to your interest. This," he says, setting down a silvered bastard sword that looked to be of archon make, "was made to kill devils, it is also electrified. I ask only 21 merts for it. Then," he says, producing an even larger sword made of blackened steel, "there is this, it is an unholy blade. I ask 19 for this." He then produces a similar looking mace. "This is heavilly enchanted to improve it's quality, and has a weaker unholy blessing too. 20 merts. "This longsword is also made to kill devils, but it works on archons, and other fiends two. Again, 20 for this." And finally, the dragon says with a smile as he retreives a wickedly barbed greensteel longspear, "There is this. It is also unholy and it inflicts horrific wounds at some cost to the wielder's own life force--not a problem for innevitables. It is also blessed with unholy energies. I ask only 37 merts for this. It is a fine deal. What say you?"
